Doxa 9: After Apples

Face-first in a bucket
of cold water,
hands held
behind your back,
the roar of friends
cheering you on
when you pop up for air
before plunging
in again, teeth
glinting in the sun
light tilting through
some maple tree’s
orange leaves,
barely hanging on.
