The breathless moment
beneath a mighty weight of waves,
floating in liquid space, salty water thrashing
flesh to and fro—above,
below. Now suspended like a wounded hawk
fallen from flight, cutting through sky;
now a child in the womb
wrapped by the heat of life.
A pregnant pause—a moment’s trust
in the sea's inscrutable tide—or
to flail, fight, rage,
rage against the drowning
of the light.
